Internet in the dorm
Internet access is either available or can be set up in all apartments. Most of our WiFi is already available when you move in (WiFi 5 everywhere, WiFi 6 & 7 in some cases). For those for whom this is not enough, the wired network access then allows up to 2.5 Gbit/s symmetrically. As a general rule, if you connect a LAN cable, you should get at least 1 Gbit/s.
The in-house network, which provides Internet access, is operated by ramnet e.V.. Usage-based fees are not charged.
Further information is available from ramnet e.V. ram is a student residence, and ramnet e.V, is by students for students.
History
ramnet is the network in the student housing complex residencia alma mater in Aachen. Planning for the network began in February 1997, and we soon launched our first flyer campaign to test the residents' interest in such a project. Shortly afterwards, the owners' meeting of the residential complex took place. There we reported on our project and - as was to be expected - met with broad approval. We were given the task of working with the condominium management to draw up more detailed plans for setting up the network, obtaining quotes and presenting the results at the next meeting.
In the following year, we then worked out the concept for the next steps together with the condominium advisory board and management: The technical, financial and legal feasibility was discussed, offers were obtained and a license agreement was drawn up.
At the owners' meeting on February 14, 1998, the time had come: the owners unanimously approved the establishment of the network by the ramnet working group and promised us financial support. Since then, the network has grown steadily thanks to the tireless efforts of AG ramnet.
In 2002, the working group was transformed into an association, which has been looking after the network ever since. Many thanks to all those involved!
Since 2012, r@mnet has had a 1 Gbit/s fiber optic line to the RWTH IT Center (formerly the data center).
In 2014, some modernization measures began to improve the availability of the network. Since then, we have also had WiFi and no more restrictions on the number of devices.
If you would like to take part, we would be delighted to have your support!
Thanks you!
